BC&C pleased to host Jiangsu guests

Hong Kong, 11 December 2023: We were delighted to welcome a delegation of senior lawyers from Jiangsu province in China as part of their visit to Hong Kong to learn more about the city’s legal system. The group came to our offices for a talk on common law litigation and attended the High Court.

“The lawyers were keen to understand the key differences between Hong Kong and Mainland law and to find out more about growing legal co-operation between the two jurisdictions,” says BC&C Managing Partner Alex Liu, who hosted the visitors together with colleagues John Zhou and Gabriel Brettell.

“There is an appreciation from all parties that deeper connections and increased mutual assistance, particularly in the context of the Greater Bay Area and Hong Kong’s important role in the National Five-Year Plan, are in everyone’s best interest and present unique business opportunities. We were pleased to greet our Jiangsu counterparts and look forward to further exploring cross-border ties.”

BC&C’s presentation to the visitors included an update on the Mainland Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters (Reciprocal Enforcement) Ordinance. The legislation, which comes into force on 29 January, will mark a new era in legal co-operation by greatly expanding the scope of court rulings which can be enforced either side of the border.
