BC&C celebrates 40 years of legal services

Hong Kong, 10 March 2025: Flashback to 1985 and there was much happening in our city. The Legislative Council held its first-ever election, poignant drama Homecoming was the major winner at the Hong Kong Film Awards and Ecuador’s Andrés Gómez won the Seiko Super Tennis tournament at Victoria Park.

As well, legal professionals Melville Boase and Colin Cohen, who had become friends and work colleagues in the preceding couple of years, decided to start their own practice. Thus, the law firm that would eventually be called Boase Cohen & Collins was launched, with offices in the relatively new Dominion Centre in Wanchai.

This year, still based in the same building, but having greatly expanded and now firmly established as an integral part of this city’s legal landscape, we celebrate our 40th anniversary.

“We have witnessed historic events and considerable change in Hong Kong over the past four decades but, I’m delighted to say, our firm has been a constant reassuring presence,” reflects Colin, Senior Partner since 2004.

“In those early days, Mel and I never imagined BC&C would still be prospering 40 years later, but we are delighted to reach this milestone. We would like to thank the many outstanding legal professionals, support staff and loyal clients who have contributed to our story.”

Mel, who retired from BC&C in 2019, adds: “From the outset, we wanted to be firmly grounded in the community, nurturing homegrown legal talent and assisting those most in need of justice. This ethos has served the firm well and long may it continue.”

Hailing from Falmouth in Cornwall, Mel came to Hong Kong in 1977 as a Crown Counsel for the government, entering private practice after completing his three-year tenure. Colin arrived from London in 1981, initially to teach law at the University of Hong Kong, before choosing to take on casework, since when he has become a familiar figure in the highest levels of Hong Kong’s legal system.

Managing Partner Alex Liu, who first joined BC&C as a trainee more than 30 years ago, will oversee the anniversary celebrations. He says: “Mel and Colin are to be congratulated for their vision and commitment which have brought our firm to this 40th anniversary. In keeping with our nature, we intend marking it with community outreach and charitable initiatives rather than lavish celebrations. Rest assured though, we will be raising a glass to this landmark occasion.”
