Seminar explores PRC insurance law

Hong Kong, 18 February 2025: Our Consultant John Zhou and Associate Joanna Chin were pleased to present a seminar entitled “China Insurance Law” to members of the Professional Insurance Brokers Association.

The three-hour session examined how the legal systems, relevant legislation and application of insurance principles differ between Hong Kong and the Mainland. As well, it focused on claim handling provisions in the Mainland’s insurance legislation. John also used a recent case handled by BC&C to demonstrate the challenges faced by Hong Kong insurers and brokers when handling claims concerning accidents in the Mainland.

“Given the growing cross-border business ties between Hong Kong and the Mainland, now being driven by the rapid development of the Greater Bay Area, it is important for insurance professionals to have full understanding of how accidents and personal injuries cases are handled by law enforcement bodies and in courts in both jurisdictions,” says John. “We were pleased to share our knowledge of this complex and evolving area of law and we trust attendees found the session useful and informative.”

Admitted to practice law in Hong Kong, the Mainland and the New York State, John has dedicated his career to cross-border dispute resolution and has vast experience in complex commercial arbitration, litigation and compliance matters. Joanna, meanwhile, is experienced in handling civil litigation cases with a focus on employees’ compensation, particularly matters involving workplace accidents and personal injuries, as well as motor incidents.

Established in 1995, the Professional Insurance Brokers Association promotes industry standards among its members and seeks to uphold its mission “To Serve and To Protect” the insurance broking industry.

The talk was organised by the Chartered Insurance Institute, a professional body dedicated to building public trust in the insurance and financial planning profession. With 122,000 members and offices in Hong Kong, Dubai and London, it has an established global presence and works closely with many affiliated insurance institutes around the world.
