Sports arbitration hits the target

Hong Kong, 13 October 2025: Our Senior Partner Colin Cohen was honoured to be part of a three-strong decision panel in a Sports Arbitration Demonstration that attracted a full house at Hong Kong Baptist University.

The mock hearing centred on a row between two squash players at a world championship tournament and was designed to showcase how arbitration works in reaching a transparent, timely and fair settlement of a dispute. The panel was chaired by former High Court judge Mohan Bharwaney, assisted by Colin and senior counsel Queenie Lau.

Says Colin: “Many sports have become multi-billion dollar global industries with multiple governance, regulatory and compliance issues. Disputes can arise at any level on myriad matters, from athlete behaviour to commercial issues. Therefore, I congratulate all involved in organising this excellent demonstration, which showcased just how efficient and effective arbitration can be as a mechanism for resolving disputes.”

Colin is a member of the Law Society of Hong Kong’s Sports Law Committee and sits on the disciplinary panel of Cricket Hong Kong. He is also former honorary secretary of Hong Kong Football Club, where he helped oversee the staging of international football, rugby and squash tournaments. He is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators and a member of the Law Society’s Panel of Arbitrators.

The demonstration was organised by the Hong Kong Bar Association, Department of Justice and HKBU. It was attended by more than 100 sports and legal professionals, academics, students and other interested parties. It also served as a timely reminder of Hong Kong Arbitration Week, which will be held from 19-24 October and is expected to attract some 1,000 delegates, including members of Boase Cohen & Collins’ legal team.
