LAWASIA Moot showcases future legal stars

Hong Kong, 4 November 2021: Colin Cohen has hailed the quality of emerging legal talent across the continent after acting as a judge in the 16th LAWASIA International Moot Competition.

“I’m delighted to confirm the students taking part were, as always, highly competent and extremely well prepared, displaying extensive knowledge of the law and possessing excellent advocacy skills. It was a pleasure to once again be involved in this prestigious event,” said Colin, Senior Partner of Boase Cohen & Collins.

Teams of legal scholars from 15 universities in Mainland China, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Vietnam, India, Cambodia, Singapore and Sri Lanka took part in the annual competition, which was held via Zoom due to the coronavirus pandemic. They put forth arguments in a fictitious international dispute involving the supply of artisanal cheese by a French producer to a Malaysian luxury hotel chain.

In his hearing, Colin chaired a three-strong judging panel that included Doddy Kosasih, an Advocate at Indonesian law firm H.K. Kosasih SH & Associates, and Jimmy Liew, a Partner of Shearn Delamore & Co in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The judging panel in the final was chaired by the Honourable Geoffrey Ma, the former Chief Justice of Hong Kong.

The winners were the National University of Singapore, with team member Karthik Vyas also being named the competition’s Best Mooter. The University of Malaya finished runners-up.

Founded in 1966, LAWASIA is an international organisation of lawyers’ associations, individual lawyers, judges, legal academics, and others that focuses on the interests and concerns of the legal profession in the Asia Pacific region.
