Young sailors ready to do battle in BC&C regatta

Hong Kong, 7 March 2019: After months of training, around 160 youngsters will take to the waters off Hong Kong’s southern coast this weekend to compete in the 2019 Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Sailing Festival.

A total of 23 teams from 17 schools are entered in the two-day regatta – to be held at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Middle Island facility – fighting for honours in a series of short-course races in two divisions, for Feva and Pico dinghies.

“We are delighted to be title sponsor of this excellent event for the fourth year in a row and are anticipating a weekend of intense and exciting racing. As an independent law firm founded in Hong Kong, we have always been committed to serving our community and, particularly, encouraging youthful initiative,” said BC&C Senior Partner Colin Cohen.

“This outstanding regatta, with its focus on schools participation, is an integral part of our social outreach programme. It is gratifying to see so many young people enjoying what is a new sport for many while, at the same time, promoting a healthy outdoor lifestyle. As well, we will once again be hosting a large number of clients and business associates at the Middle Island clubhouse on Sunday afternoon.”

The Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Sailing Festival sees teams, comprising a minimum of six sailors, manning three dinghies in a team racing format against their opposition. The results for each boat in a team are combined, so the format neutralises the benefit of having one good sailor in a team. Tactics feature heavily, with competitors strategically delaying opposition boats to help boost their team’s aggregate score.

The event is also designated a Clean Regatta by Sailors for the Sea, a non-profit organisation dedicated to conserving and protecting the ocean. Around 1,000 sailing events worldwide are registered with the Clean Regatta programme, which encourages sustainability and limiting environmental impact. Last year’s regatta received Gold Certification, the highest level award.

Highly competitive short-course racing is the hallmark of the BC&C Inter-School Sailing Festival.
