Eight awards for BC&C at pro bono ceremony

Hong Kong, 13 December 2018: Boase Cohen & Collins has collected a record eight awards from the Law Society of Hong Kong in recognition of the firm’s pro bono work and service to the community.

Senior Partner Colin Cohen and Partner Alex Liu each received Gold Awards for providing more than 100 hours of free legal advice and expertise to a broad range of deserving individuals and organisations in the past year.

Silver Awards were given to Partner Lisa Wong and Consultant Melville Boase while Bronze Awards went to Partner Fiona Chan and Associate Stephanie Lai. In addition, Mr Cohen was honoured for increasing his pro bono commitments in the past year while Boase Cohen & Collins received a Silver Award in the category for firms.

The awards, given under the Law Society’s Pro Bono and Community Work Recognition Programme, were handed out in a presentation ceremony at Department of Justice headquarters in Lower Albert Road, Central, yesterday evening.

“This year’s Law Society programme has resulted in our largest haul of awards yet and is a reflection of the ethos which runs through our firm. We are happy to report that more than half our legal team recorded pro bono work in the past year while still more contributed their time and enthusiasm to various community, charitable and educational initiatives,” said Mr Cohen.

The jewel in the crown of BC&C’s pro bono work in 2017-18 was acting for Designing Hong Kong Limited, a non-profit organisation, in a judicial review concerning public access to the waterfront in Hong Kong’s iconic harbour. This case went all the way to the Court of Final Appeal and became highly significant for establishing the legal principles governing protective costs orders. BC&C began its pro bono work on the matter in 2014 and in the past year alone the firm’s lawyers logged in excess of 172 hours.

Mr Liu, winner of an individual Gold Award for the fifth year running, logged an exceptional 235.5 hours of pro bono work and community service in 2017-18 for an array of non-profit organisations. “I enjoy donating my time and knowledge to assist organisations which are part of the fabric of our community and individuals whose need for justice, given their circumstances, is greater than most,” he commented.

VIP guests at the awards ceremony included the Chief Justice of Hong Kong, the Honourable Geoffrey Ma, and the Honourable Teresa Cheng, Secretary for Justice.
