HKU Faculty of Law begins 50th anniversary celebrations

Hong Kong, 16 July 2018: Boase Cohen & Collins is looking forward to playing an active role in the 50th anniversary celebrations of the University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Law, says Senior Partner Colin Cohen.

The Faculty is organising a series of events between now and December 2019 under the heading “Law, Justice and Humanity: 50 Years and Beyond” designed to showcase its history and achievements as well as look forward to the next half century.

“On behalf of everyone at Boase Cohen & Collins, I would like to congratulate the Faculty of Law on its golden jubilee and pay tribute to its fantastic work in nurturing countless legal professionals who have gone on to be an integral part of Hong Kong’s justice system,” said Mr Cohen, who is an honorary lecturer and external examiner with the Faculty.

“Our firm enjoys close links with the Faculty and we anticipate being actively involved in the anniversary celebrations. Certainly, the third annual HKU-Boase Cohen & Collins Criminal Law Lecture, due to be held in January 2019, will be one of the signature events.”

BC&C’s ties with the Faculty of Law date back more than three decades to when Mr Cohen was a lecturer at HKU prior to establishing the firm with Melville Boase in 1985. Besides the annual Criminal Law Lecture, BC&C also sponsors an award – the BC&C Prize in Accounts and Financial Management – which is presented each year to a law student with outstanding performance, while the firm’s continuing support for the HKU Foundation has seen it elevated to Senior Member level of the charitable organisation.

BC&C Partner Lisa Wong attended on behalf of the firm when the Faculty launched its golden jubilee celebrations with a drinks reception and ceremony that included a speech by the Chief Justice, the Honourable Geoffrey Ma.

HKU first started offering law courses in September 1964 via its Department of Extra-mural Studies. The Department of Law was established in September 1969 with an initial intake of 40 students and was originally located in Caine Road.
