BC&C and its lawyers honoured for voluntary work

Hong Kong, 14 December 2017: Boase Cohen & Collins and four of its most prominent lawyers have been recognised by the Law Society of Hong Kong for their commitment to the community.

Partner Alex Liu has received a prestigious Gold Award under the Law Society’s Pro Bono and Community Work Recognition Programme for the fourth year in a row.

Senior Partner Colin Cohen, Partner Lisa Wong and Consultant Melville Boase – who co-founded the firm with Mr Cohen 32 years ago – each received Silver Awards. In addition, BC&C was collectively honoured with a Silver Award in the law firms category.

“As lawyers, the justice system affords us a living, but it also provides us with an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to society,” commented Mr Liu. “It is a privilege to use my professional knowledge and skills for the betterment of our community.”

Mr Liu donated his services to various groups including Lions Clubs International, the Hong Kong Guide Dogs Association, the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Small and Medium Enterprises Association.

The awards ceremony was staged last night at Department of Justice headquarters in Central where the guests of honour included the Chief Justice, the Honourable Geoffrey Ma, and the Secretary for Justice, the Honourable Rimsky Yuen.

Mr Cohen was delighted to see the firm achieve its best performance since the Pro Bono and Community Work Recognition Programme was established by the Law Society in 2010.

“This significant return is testament not only to the four individual award winners but to all our lawyers and support staff who have demonstrated admirable commitment to worthy causes in Hong Kong,” he said.

“In total, over the course of the year, our lawyers provided almost 500 service hours of pro bono and community work to a wide range of charities, non-profit organisations, local interest groups and individuals who otherwise would have struggled to obtain legal guidance and justice.

“We believe we have an obligation to serve our community and make the justice system work for people who have little to offer in return except for their gratitude.”
